College Mentors for Kids is proud to honor Alex Blubaugh with the 2020 Inspiring Alumni Award in Mentoring!
Alex Blubaugh graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering and currently serves as Operations Manager at Eli Lilly and Company. Alex is an accomplished young professional who fully embraces College Mentors for Kids’ mission. Since becoming involved with Purdue University’s chapter nearly 10 years ago, Alex has continued to support the organization in many facets, including through his dedicated work with the young professional group EtC.
Alex’s story with College Mentors began when a friend encouraged him to sign up for the program during his freshman year at Purdue. On his first activity day, Alex was paired with his little buddy Noah. Alex was skeptical of joining a new group at first, but upon the first activity visit and seeing the need and the impact of the other college students, he was hooked. The bond they developed impacted Alex as much as it did Noah and motivated Alex to fully immerse himself in College Mentors for years to come. A committed and ambitious student leader, Alex took on the role of chapter president his senior year and encouraged the Purdue chapter to serve more kids and implement new initiatives. Two of Alex’s fellow student leaders nominated him for President of the Year saying, “[Alex] is synonymous with College Mentors for Kids. He is always working to find new ways to improve. Alex puts all his heart and effort into this organization. His commitment goes beyond simply being helpful, he encourages our staff to mentor other members of our organization. He facilitates a structure of mentoring throughout the entire program. Alex is personally committed to mentoring and it shines brightly in all aspects of our chapter.”
Since graduating in 2014, Alex has continued to be synonymous with the College Mentors for Kids program and remains a committed volunteer. As one of the organization’s strongest alumni advocates, he channels his belief that “positive mentoring is the best pathway to changing cultures, visions, and reversing cycles of poverty” into consistent, effective action on behalf of College Mentors for Kids. A founding member and past chair of College Mentors’ young professional group EtC, Alex has been integral in spreading awareness and creating opportunities for more people to become involved with the program by garnering support for annual events, leading peer-to-peer fundraising efforts, organizing barbeques, and attending National Conference and the Mentoring in Action reception. Alex shares “I continue to give because of the impact the program had on me and all of the other college students who are involved with the program. The program instills an inherent sense of charity, compassion, and care for others in our community.”
A model alumnus and volunteer, we are grateful for Alex’s innumerable contributions to College Mentors for Kids.
