College Mentors for Kids Chapter Leaders Travel to Indianapolis for Annual National Conference

Indianapolis, Indiana – Nearly two hundred college students took a break from their busy schedules to travel to Indianapolis for a weekend full of training and capacity building. Thirty-four universities from nine states were represented, with the common thread of all students holding leadership positions within their university chapters of College Mentors for Kids.

The 2018 National Conference, held at the NCAA Headquarters August 25-26, consisted of two days of networking, position trainings, and presentations from guest speakers to give chapter leaders the tools they need to lead their chapters. Alison Isom, College Mentors for Kids at Illinois State University chapter president, shared, “There is something inspiring about bringing together leaders on a nation-wide-level. Everyone is passionate about what they do in our program, which makes for a productive weekend full of inspiration!” This feeling was shared by College Mentors for Kids Purdue University chapter president, Lindsay Grzymski, “National Conference is such a great experience that allows you to connect with other leaders and learn from your peers. You leave Conference with so much knowledge on how to make the biggest impact on the little buddies and be the best leader you can be!”

In addition to position specific trainings for chapter leaders, outside speakers presented on topics including cultural competency, poverty, and leadership. Dr. Ronda Hamm of Corteva Agriscience, agricultural division of DowDuPont, gave a presentation on incorporating STEM into activities and shared how mentoring impacted her life, reminding students, “each and every one of you, as a mentor, has the power to positively influence a life.”

Reflecting on the weekend, College Mentors CEO, Shelley Hunter, shared, “Chapter leaders headed back to their campuses with the tools and resources essential to lead their chapters in the 2018-2019 program year, connecting 2,700 elementary students with a college student mentor.”

College Mentors for Kids is grateful to the many sponsors of the 2018 National Conference, including Corteva Agriscience.
