For more than 20 years, College Mentors has been building hope, empowering mentors and changing the lives of thousands of students. College Mentors was founded in 1995 by two Indiana University students, Heidi Schmidt and Kristin Huang, who were united by a common goal of creating brighter futures for local youth.
Today, College Mentors has grown into a high-impact national organization at colleges and universities across nine states, including Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, and Virginia. With roughly 2,800 college student volunteers, the organization is able to mentor more than 2,500 kids.

A recent long-term survey along with countless stories of success show the power of mentoring to set kids on a path to a brighter future.  It also shows that kids in College Mentors for Kids are out performing their peers.

campaign details

College Mentors’ Twentieth-Anniversary Campaign has served as both a celebration of the program’s 20+ years of lasting impact and as a catalyst for smart growth, program improvements, and the launch of an alumni program. College Mentors’ campaign is allowing the organization to continue to expand its impact and be recognized as the leading national mentoring program pairing elementary-school children with college mentors for structured experiences and one-on-one mentoring.

In 2015, to launch the campaign, F. A. Wilhelm Construction Company pledged to make its largest single corporate gift in the company’s history. Wilhelm Construction serves as the lead champion for College Mentors’ Twentieth-Anniversary Campaign with their $100,000 program investment.

Throughout its more than 20 years of history, College Mentors’ growth and lasting impact on disadvantaged youth has only been possible thanks to the unwavering financial support of dedicated staff members, board of directors, partners, college student volunteers, alumni and donors. The lead gift from Wilhelm Construction anchored the next 20 years for our organization to continue transforming lives and building brighter futures. Matching gifts from CJ McClanahan, the Ackerman Foundation, Joe Cathcart, Tiffany and JR Sauder and the Lacy Foundation have provided challenge matches throughout the campaign thus far to help build the future success of College Mentors.
